Ugandan Boxing Shines: Only Two Boxers Make WBC Rankings in August

Ugandan boxing continues to make its mark on the international stage, albeit with only two fighters earning spots in the August WBC rankings.

Sulaiman “Sula” Segawa leads the charge as Uganda’s top-ranked featherweight. Segawa, with a professional record of 25 fights – 17 wins (6 KOs), 5 losses, 3 draws, is currently ranked #1 in Uganda and #27 worldwide. His career highlights include a major victory over Ruben Villa at Palms Casino, Las Vegas on July 13, 2024, where he captured the WBC Silver Featherweight Title. Segawa faced a recent setback, losing the title to Bruce Carrington at Madison Square Garden, New York, on September 27, 2024, but he is set to return to the ring against Bryan Acosta on September 5, 2025, at the Entertainment and Sports Arena, Washington.

In the super middleweight division, Shadiri Musa Bwogi, former captain of Uganda’s national boxing team, the Bombers, has earned international recognition as the current ABU Super Middleweight Champion. Musa secured his title by defeating Jason Medi of South Africa at Brixton Multi-Purpose Centre, Johannesburg, via majority decision. Musa remains unbeaten in his 9 professional bouts, with 5 wins by knockout, and is now ranked #1 in Uganda and #101 worldwide. His position in the ABU rankings mirrors the path of fellow Ugandan John Sserunjogi, who previously qualified by holding the ABU title but did not defend it against Medi.

The WBC rankings process is meticulous and rigorous, analyzing 150–200 fights each month. Rankings consider fight results, boxers’ records, and expert reports from managers, promoters, and WBC representatives worldwide. Each case undergoes careful discussion, drafts, and final approval by the WBC Chairman, ensuring objectivity, fairness, and accuracy.

With only Segawa and Musa representing Uganda in the WBC rankings this month, the spotlight is firmly on them as the faces of Ugandan boxing on the global stage, demonstrating the growing potential of the country’s professional fighters.
