The Ugandan boxing fraternity is mourning the sudden death of teenage boxer Koren Lwanga, a rising talent who had only recently stepped into the professional ranks.
Lwanga, aged 17, tragically passed away this week after an electric shock incident at his residence along Entebbe Road, where he was also training.
Having made his professional debut on December 7, 2024, Lwanga fought one of Uganda’s Champions League prospects, Brolline Kimbugwe aka “Style”, a bout he lost by knockout in the third round. Despite the setback, many believed the youngster had a bright future ahead, given his determination to rise through the ranks.
At the time of his passing, Lwanga was ranked 29th out of 31 in Uganda and 2,099th out of 2,273 worldwide in the super welterweight division.
His death has sent shockwaves through the local boxing industry, cutting short what many saw as the beginning of a promising career. Coaches, promoters, and fellow fighters have expressed deep sorrow, describing him as a disciplined and hardworking athlete who was eager to learn and improve.
This tragedy comes as a huge loss not only to his family but also to Uganda’s boxing community, which continues to nurture young talent despite numerous challenges.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
