Uganda Dominates Kenya in Grassroots Boxing Clash

Ugandan boxing once again proved its superiority in East Africa after an electrifying day in Kisumu, where every Ugandan fighter who stepped into the ring emerged victorious against their Kenyan opponents.

The highlight of the night came from team captain Kassim Mulungi, who stopped Kenya’s Boaz Ambuka in the second round, setting the tone for Uganda’s clean sweep. He was quickly followed by Moses Kimera, who overpowered Brian Okemwa with another second-round stoppage, and Innocent Tumusiime, who also sealed his victory with a round-two stoppage.

Uganda’s winning streak continued as Dennis Muleme showcased skill and discipline to outpoint Richard Agembo 3-0, while Hussein Twashir earned a convincing 3-0 points win. Senior stylist Broline Kimbungwe capped the night with yet another 3-0 triumph against Ferdinand Ochieng, further solidifying Uganda’s dominance.

Coaches Lora Kalyango (Team Manager and Head Coach) and Hassan (Head of Delegation, East Coast Boxing Club), flanked by coaches Mawa, Abbas, Henry, and David, expressed their joy after the matches, promising that Ugandan boxers will return home with gold medals after the finals at Grace Ogot Social Hall tomorrow.

However, the evening was not without disappointment. Women’s coach Shakira Mukungu Khali Mohammed revealed her frustration after five of Uganda’s six female boxers failed to secure opponents. Despite assurances from Nairobi Boxing Club, no fighters were provided, leaving only Zahara Nandawula with a bout against a Kenyan from Kisumu Boxing Club. Rising stars like Brenda Muduwa “The Ring Beast”, Angel Katushabe “The Warrior and The Stopper”, Jesca Akello “The Hitter”, Princess Hazel Amutuhairwe “The Punisher”, and Rashida Nakawoza “Small Body, Big Brain” were left sidelined without competition.

IBA referee and judge Ben Kiwanuka, who is currently officiating in Kisumu, applauded the Ugandan contingent for showcasing their dominance at the grassroots level.

Uganda’s performance has once again underlined its status as the powerhouse of grassroots boxing in East Africa, leaving Kenyan boxing fans with more questions than answers.
