gnatius Onyango returned to the ring after nearly a year out of action and managed to secure a hard-fought Split Decision (SD) victory over Abdul Wanyama during the Sweet Science Reloaded event organized by Nara Promotions.
While Onyango walked away with the win, his performance left much to be desired. Many in the boxing fraternity believe that the long layoff since his last fight in September 2024 against Tanzania’s Gihi heavily contributed to his ring rust and lackluster display.
The fight itself was closely contested, with Wanyama pressing forward and capitalizing on Onyango’s slower reflexes and timing. Things got worse for Onyango in the fourth round when he sustained a cut above his eye, which visibly unsettled him and disrupted his rhythm.
Despite his struggles, Onyango dug deep in the later rounds and did just enough to convince two of the three judges to score the bout in his favor. However, fans and analysts alike expressed concern over the performance, questioning whether Onyango is still in top competitive form.
“He looked off tonight. It’s clear the long break affected his sharpness,” one fan commented ringside. “He’ll need more fights to get back to the Onyango we know.”
Representing Nara Promotions, Onyango remains undefeated under their banner, but the team now faces the urgent task of bringing him back to regular action to rebuild his confidence and conditioning.
As the dust settles from Sweet Science Reloaded, Onyango’s win keeps him in the conversation, but it also raises a big question: can he return to his peak—or will ring rust continue to haunt his comeback?
