Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) President Moses Muhangi has officially announced his intention to contest in the forthcoming 2026 UBF presidential elections, confirming his return to the race as the federation enters a crucial leadership transition period.
Muhangi’s declaration comes shortly after the UBF Electoral Committee released the official roadmap for the 2026 elections, setting in motion an electoral process that will culminate in the election of a new president and executive committee on or before February 28, 2026.
The roadmap, unveiled by Electoral Committee Chairman Paul Mukasa, outlines key activities running from January 24 to February 28, 2026, including civic education, display of the voters’ register, nomination of candidates, voting, and the declaration of results by delegates to the General Assembly and chairpersons of member associations.
“We have officially started the UBF electoral exercise by releasing the roadmap today. Several activities are lined up to ensure a transparent, free, and fair process,” Mukasa told WallnetNews Digital, assuring stakeholders of equal opportunity for all eligible participants.
According to the Electoral Committee, the issuance of nomination forms began on Saturday, January 24, and will run until February 6, 2026, at the UBF offices. Mukasa emphasized that any eligible individual willing to serve the sport and meeting the required standards is free to contest for any position.
Muhangi, who was first elected UBF president in January 2018, is now seeking what would be his third term at the helm of the federation. His announcement has immediately sharpened focus on the upcoming elections, signaling continuity while simultaneously raising questions about potential challengers.
The electoral process has already reignited debate within Uganda’s boxing fraternity, particularly regarding the future leadership of the federation and the integration of professional boxing under the UBF framework, as mandated by the new Sports Bill.
Attention has also turned to whether other prominent figures within the sport will step forward to challenge the incumbent. One name previously linked to speculation is top boxing promoter Eddie Bazira, the current head of the Uganda Professional Boxing Commission (UPBC), elected on a mandate to operate under UBF. However, UPBC has faced operational challenges over the past year, during which professional boxing events were not sanctioned under its authority, with UBF temporarily assuming the mandate.
With Muhangi now officially in the race, stakeholders across the boxing community are closely watching to see whether additional candidates will emerge before the close of nominations, setting up what could become one of the most closely contested and consequential elections in UBF history.
As the nomination window remains open, anticipation continues to build over who will ultimately contest for leadership and shape the next chapter of boxing governance in Uganda.
