Ivan Magumba Appeals to UBF Licensing Chairperson to Unite Boxing Stakeholders

Ugandan super middleweight boxer Ivan Magumba has made an emotional appeal to Madam Maureen, the current Chairperson of the Licensing Committee under the Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF), urging her to help unite boxers, promoters, managers, and agents in an effort to revive professional boxing in the country.

Magumba expressed deep concern about the continued slowdown of Uganda’s professional boxing scene, noting that many athletes have remained inactive throughout the year due to disunity and lack of coordination among key stakeholders.

“Madam Maureen has the voice and authority to bring everyone together — the promoters, managers, and boxers,” Magumba said. “If she steps in and unites them, the sport can rise again. Right now, many boxers are idle, frustrated, and losing hope because they don’t know what to do next. Some are even losing form and career momentum.”

According to information from the UBF Licensing Committee, only six professional events have been sanctioned so far this year. Officials, however, remain optimistic about improvement in 2026, describing 2025 as a year of settling disputes and aligning operations with the national sports law. The committee believes these administrative efforts will lay a stronger foundation for a more organized and active boxing calendar moving forward.

The Risks of Inactivity in Professional Boxing

The slowdown in professional boxing activities has affected every corner of the sport. For boxers, long periods without fights result in loss of fitness, reduced rankings, and financial strain. Many fighters rely on competition for income, and inactivity threatens not only their livelihoods but also their mental and physical well-being.

Promoters and managers are equally impacted, as fewer events mean fewer sponsorships, reduced audience engagement, and loss of trust from investors and fans. Meanwhile, boxing enthusiasts across Uganda are left without the thrilling events and rivalries that keep the sport alive and growing.

If the current trend continues, Uganda risks losing a generation of talented fighters who may walk away from the sport entirely.

Writer’s Opinion

Uganda’s boxing talent is undeniable — the passion, the energy, and the potential are all there. But without unity and structured leadership, the sport cannot grow. The Licensing Committee under the UBF holds the key to restoring order and rebuilding trust among stakeholders.

Madam Maureen’s leadership could be the bridge the sport needs right now — her voice can inspire dialogue, cooperation, and renewed activity. The call by Ivan Magumba is not just an emotional plea; it is a timely reminder that without unity, there can be no progress — and without fights, there can be no future for Ugandan professional boxing.
