Ugandan super featherweight prospect Aaron Ouma maintained his unbeaten record over the weekend, but his latest victory against Rogers Kamulegeya left many observers questioning his performance.
Ouma, who entered the fight with an impressive record of 4 wins from 4 fights (3 by knockout), was widely expected to dominate. Ranked 5th out of 20 in Uganda and 473rd globally out of 2,001 in the super featherweight division, Ouma has been viewed as one of the country’s brightest rising stars.
However, what was supposed to be a routine victory turned into a frustrating encounter. His opponent, Kamulegeya — inactive on BoxRec and coming off a first-round knockout loss to Musuza Hassan on August 23, 2024 — was seen as a clear underdog. With only one win in nine professional bouts, Kamulegeya had little to show for his career so far, fueling expectations of an easy night for Ouma.
An Uninspiring Contest
Instead, Kamulegeya adopted a defensive and holding style, tying Ouma up whenever he attempted to mount an attack. The strategy neutralized much of Ouma’s power and rhythm, leaving the fight short on excitement and denying fans the fireworks they anticipated.
Despite controlling the bout, Ouma struggled to showcase the sharpness and finishing instinct he had displayed in his previous outings. The judges awarded him a unanimous decision (UD) victory, but observers were quick to note that it was arguably his worst performance to date.
Expectations vs. Reality
Many fans and analysts had predicted a quick knockout, perhaps within the first rounds, given Kamulegeya’s poor record and vulnerability in past fights. Instead, the six-round contest dragged on, exposing areas where Ouma may need to improve — particularly in dealing with awkward or overly defensive opponents.
Looking Ahead
While Ouma’s unbeaten record remains intact, the fight serves as a reminder that every opponent poses a different challenge. If he is to rise higher in the rankings and fulfill his potential, Ouma will need to adapt his approach and prove that he can adjust when faced with frustrating styles.
For Kamulegeya, the bout was another tough night in a career marked by struggles, but his ability to spoil Ouma’s rhythm was a small moral victory, even in defeat.
As the dust settles, boxing fans will be eager to see how Ouma responds in his next outing — and whether he can recapture the explosive form that made him one of Uganda’s most talked-about prospects.
